Design Story and Inspiration for the Unforgettable One-Skein Scarf

I created this scarf as a quick project to wear with my black dress and new tall boots. I wanted something I could crochet super fast and that was very easy. This simple pattern uses basic stitches to create a beautiful texture in a color changing yarn!

I love double crochet V-stitches, and they worked out so well with this amazing yarn! This project is a great stash buster as it’s a wonderful way to use up your yarn stash since you only need a single skein. It uses basic crochet stitches (chains and double crochet stitches) for an easy one skein crochet pattern.

Yarn Options for This One Skein Scarf Design

The Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable yarn is absolutely beautiful and turned this simple scarf into something special. Perfect for the fall weather we are having here – as evidenced by the beautiful trees in our backyard.

This one skein pattern does use up the entire skein, so if you have a gorgeous skein of yarn that you’d love to turn into a friendly scarf pattern, this beautiful scarf pattern is for you! It would look amazing in a single skein of hand-dyed yarn, too.

Sometimes crochet colorwork can be a bit daunting, but with yarns like this, all of the colorwork is done for you! You worry about the stitch pattern and leave the color up to the yarn. It’s really a win-win. Other yarns that are similar are Lion Brand Scarfie (which easily makes a really long one skein scarf!) or Hobbii Carnival. I’ve also seen some beautiful ones made from Lion Brand Mandala.

Feel free to use any worsted weight yarn that you like – it really doesn’t matter if you get gauge on a scarf, which is one of the best things about them! You could even use any yarn weight you like, it will just affect how wide the scarf is. Adjust your hook size accordingly if you change yarn weight (check the label on the ball band for recommended hook size).

Make sure to check out the matching crochet beanie pattern, too!

Pattern Details

This project is made entirely of a V-stitch repeat that consists of a double crochet, chain 1, double crochet in the same space. It’s so easy to remember and really gives a nice look and texture to the project.

If you’d like a one skein infinity scarf, simply seam the edges together when you are done and you have an infinity scarf with lots of texture!

This is by far my most popular pattern on Ravelry and I am simply amazed by how many of you have made Unforgettable One-Skein Scarves of your own. Thank you!

This pattern is written in US crochet terms.

Common Questions about Scarves Made with One Skein of Yarn

Can I crochet a scarf with one skein of yarn?

Yes! There are lots of one skein scarf patterns available, and most skeins of yarn have enough yardage to make a scarf. How wide your scarf will be will vary by how many yards are on your skein, but a single skein is often all you need to make a beautiful crochet scarf.

How many skeins do I need to crochet a scarf?

Most all scarves can be crocheted with just one or two skeins of yarn, so they are great projects for using up random skeins that may be left over from other projects or that were given to you as gifts. Scarves are wonderful projects for just a couple of skeins and they allow you to practice your crochet skills.

How much can you crochet with one skein of yarn?

You would be surprised how many things you can crochet with one skein of yarn! Some of the most popular one skein crochet patterns are scarves, dishcloths, hats, face scrubbies, potholders, small bags and purses and so much more!

    • Unforgettable One Skein Crochet Scarf - Free Pattern (27)amanda

      Hi Connie,

You should skip the (dc, ch-1, dc) of the V-st, then sc after the V-st. 🙂

      • Unforgettable One Skein Crochet Scarf - Free Pattern (28)Joy Kaberline

Oh I’m so glad I got clarification on this is the comments. Is there a way to add the parentheses to the pattern just in case others find it an issue too?

Is there a video showing how to crochet the edging. I see the explanation above. I’m still a little confused.

        • Unforgettable One Skein Crochet Scarf - Free Pattern (32)amanda

I’m sorry, there isn’t a video for that part. This was one of my earliest videos and I have learned a lot since then! 🙂

  11. Unforgettable One Skein Crochet Scarf - Free Pattern (33)Wanda

This is a very lovely pattern and you explain it very well. I’m sorry, but I just can’t watch you crochet. I know that is how you learned, but it seems like you put an extra step into your crocheting. and it drives me crazy. Again, I understand that is how you learned. Your tutorials are very good, so I’ll watch as much as I need to to get the pattern. Keep up the good work.

    • Unforgettable One Skein Crochet Scarf - Free Pattern (34)amanda

      Hi Wanda,

This is one of my earliest videos. I taught myself how to crochet, so that’s the reason it’s a bit different, but I crochet differently for my tutorials now. Try watching a newer video on the channel and see if that is better. 🙂

  12. Unforgettable One Skein Crochet Scarf - Free Pattern (35)JULIE BUCHY
