One of my favorite things to do when meal planning is, before making my list, I always check the weekly sales flyers from my favorite stores. One of the places we hit up all the time is Sprouts. There’s a Sprouts right by my hubby’s office and I often text him a list of items to pick up on the way home. (Usually on Wednesday, when you get to shop the previous AND the current week’s deals.)

A couple of weeks ago Sprouts had country style pork ribs on sale for a $1.99 a pound, (which is a pretty good price) so I had my hubby stop by and grab a couple of pounds. (Along with strawberries, they were on sale, 2lbs for 99 cents! Hence my Strawberry Trifle Recipe from the other day.)

We still don’t have our outdoor grill area set up after moving. (We have a few other landscape things to finish first.) Lucily, the pressure cooker is a great way to cook meat when we can’t grill. I decided to do these country style ribs in my Instant Pot. (And just FYI, this recipe works with baby back ribs as well.)

What’s the difference between country style ribs and baby back ribs?

Country style ribs are not actually ribs since they don’t have any rib bones. They’re cut from the loin, close to the shoulder, are meatier and have more fat than both baby back ribs and spare ribs. (Which is why I like them, lol.) They are more like thick delicious pork chop shaped ribs.

If you have a pressure cooker, but have never tried ribs in it, you really have to give this rib recipe a try. The rib meat turns out so tender and because the cooking environment is so moist, the ribs don’t dry out.

If you’d like to add this pressure cooker pork ribs recipe to your meal plan here is what you need:

Ingredients needed for pressure cooker ribs:

How to make ribs in Pressure cooker:

You will love how easy ribs are to make in the pressure cooker. Season the meat, add a bit of water, top with a little bit of barbeque sauce, select the meat/stew button, adjust the time, press start and that’s it! No babysitting the meat, sweating it out by the grill and no heating up the kitchen!

How long do you cook ribs in the pressure cooker:

The cooking time for pork ribs in the pressure cooker is 20 minutes on high pressure for tender ribs, or 25 minutes for fall off the bone tender. (Which is what I did.)

After the cooking time is complete, let the pressure cooker naturally release pressure for 10 to 15 minutes, then you can quick release the rest of the pressure.

Remove the ribs from the cooking liquid, top with a bit more barbeque sauce and let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

The result: flavorful, tender pork ribs!

FAQs

Is it better to slow cook or pressure cook pork ribs? ›

Nothing that a little sauce can't fix, and it does mean you get more of the pork flavor, but they're not as nuanced. And the winner is: The slow cooker, but just by a hair (by a rib?). If you're pressed for time, pressure cooker is the way to go.

Can you stack ribs in pressure cooker? ›

Instant Pot / Pressure Cooker

I cook them on the rack to hold them above the drippings and wrap them around the inside of the bowl to keep the full rack together. (You can also slice the ribs into small segments and stack them. Cook time is the same.)

Should you pressure cook ribs before grilling? ›

The Instant Pot is the perfect vehicle to cook tender, fall off the bone meat in a short amount of time. Because you pressure cook the ribs, they are super tender, but they do need another quick cook either in the oven or on the grill to finish them off and give them a nice crust.

How to cook ribs in a pressure cooker XL? ›

Pour in the water, making sure not to submerge the ribs completely. The water will create steam, which will help tenderize the meat. Secure the lid on the Power Pressure Cooker XL and set it to the “Meat/Stew” mode. Adjust the cooking time to 25 minutes.

Does pressure cooked pork make tender? ›

The pressure cooker can tenderize the most stubborn cut of meat and turn tough chewy fibers into gelatin, but a few wrong moves can turn meat into a shriveled tasteless lump.

Do pork ribs get more tender the longer they cook? ›

Slower methods can be ready in as little as 30 minutes - however, keep in mind that the longer you cook your pork back ribs the more tender and succulent they'll be.

Should ribs be covered in liquid in a slow cooker? ›

Don't worry that the ribs go into the slow cooker without liquid; the heat is gentle enough that the ribs do not burn, and the meat releases liquid as it cooks, so it braises in its own spiced juices. (You could also make these ribs in a pressure cooker by following this recipe.)

Do you put fat side up or down in pressure cooker? ›

Now place the trivet (that came with your Instant Pot) on top of the onions, with the handles facing up… ..and place the roast on top of the trivet, fatty side-up (this will allow the juices from the fat to coarse through the meat as it cooks).

Can you pressure cook meat too much? ›

Unfortunately, once you overcook a piece of meat in the pressure cooker, there's no going back. You'll be left with a pile of dry, crunchy, tasteless fibers and no amount of additional pressure cooking is going to put that moisture back into the meat.

Do you cook ribs meat side up or down? ›

I always smoke mine bone side down (so the meaty side is facing up), for two reasons. First, I want the smoke to penetrate the bone side too, so each and every bite of the ribs is equally smoky and delicious. Secondly, if you cook them bone side UP, the juices will pool in the concave center of the bones.

Do you cook ribs bone up or down when cooking? ›

Remove the ribs from the marinade and add them to the grill over indirect heat, bone-side down. Cover the grill and cook, rotating once or twice, until the meat is tender and the internal temperature reaches somewhere between 180 and 195 degrees.

Do you have to flip ribs when cooking? ›

Place ribs directly on clean grill grate and grill for 2 hours, rotating every 45 minutes or so to ensure even cooking. After two hours, remove ribs from the grill and wrap tightly in foil.

What do you spritz ribs with when cooking? ›

With that in mind, what I tend to use and find is the best spritz for smoking is apple cider vinegar but water will work as well, or a 50/50 mix. Another great alternative is apple juice where the sugars in the juice also add another level of flavour to your bark.

What is the best rib cooking method? ›

The 321 Method for Ribs is a popular method of cooking ribs on the grill or in the oven. It involves prepping, seasoning and cooking the ribs slowly over low heat for three hours. The first two hours are devoted to preparing the rub and marinade, while the last hour is used to cook the ribs at a higher temperature.

Is it better to pressure cook or slow cook meat? ›

Slow cookers are much better for cooking root vegetables and tough cuts of meat because the long, low-temperature cooking process is great for adding moisture and breaking down fat. Pressure cookers can get hot enough for meats and vegetables to brown in them when cooking, but slow cookers can't.

Is pressure cooking or slow cooking better for meat? ›

This completely depends on the type of meat you are planning on cooking. Because slow cookers take longer to cook, they are better suited to breaking down fat in meat while adding moisture. So if you are planning on cooking a whole rump beef, then a slow cooker is a better choice.

Does pressure cooking or slow cooking make meat more tender? ›

Both slow cookers and pressure cookers do a good job of tenderizing tough meat, but each makes meat more edible in a different way. A pressure cooker is an enclosed pot with a lid that locks to form an airtight seal.
