Crochet an Oval in Spiral Rounds

The following instruction shows how to crochet an oval, starting with 6 chain stitches. A formula how to crochet individually large or small, longish or roundish ovals is to be found further below.

Each oval starts with crocheting a chain, which is then crocheted around and then continued to be worked in spiral rounds.

The following example creates the following oval:

Crochet the oval in Bordeaux in spiral rounds.
Round 1: 6 chain stitches, 1 sc into the 2nd stitch from the hook, 3 sc, 3 stitches into the next stitch.

Now continue to crochet on the underside of the chain. For this you push with the crochet hook through the loop/s on the underside of the chain and continue to crochet as usual. 3 sc, 1 sc increase (12 stitches).

1 slip stitch into the 1st stitch of the round. IMPORTANT: Treat this slip stitch as the new end of the round, so the next stitch you crochet is the 1st stitch of the new round in which you place your stitch marker. Because of this shifted end of the round, it is now possible to crochet ovals of any size following a very simple and clear formula.

Round 2: [3 sc, [1 increase] repeat 3 times] repeat 2 times (18 Maschen).

Round 3: [3 sc, [1 sc, 1 increase] repeat 3 times] repeat 2 times (24 Maschen).

The Ultimate Oval Crochet Formula

Each oval begins with a chain which must be at least 4 chain stitches long. If you would start with 3 chain stitches you would get a circle.

The longer the initial chain, the longer and more pointed the oval becomes. The shorter the chain, the rounder the oval becomes.

To use the oval formula, you only have to do the following small calculation and insert the value for X into the crochet pattern below wherever an X appears. This value remains the same in all rounds.

Number of initial chain stitches – 3 = X single crochet stitches

Example: You start with 10 chain stitches. From this value 3 are subtracted and you get 7. This value now indicates how many single crochet stitches you have to crochet each time when an X appears. In this case 7 single crochet stitches.

6 stitches are added per round. To check if you always have the right number of stitches per round, write down the initial number of stitches from the first round and add 6 stitches per round. This tells you how many stitches should be present in each round.

Crochet the oval in spiral rounds.
Round 1: Number of initial chain stitches, 1 sc into the 2nd stitch from the hook, X sc, 3 sc into the next stitch. Now continue to crochet on the underside of the chain. X sc, 1 sc increase, 1 slip stitch into the 1st stitch of the round. IMPORTANT: The new round starts after the slip stitch.

Oval Crochet Formula with 8 Increases

The following pattern let you crochet an oval with 8 increases per round instead of 6 increases like the oval in the previous pattern.

If your crocheted oval should deform slightly with the previous formula, then crochet according to this pattern.

8 stitches are added per round. To check if you always have the right number of stitches per round, write down the initial number of stitches from the first round and add 8 stitches per round. This tells you how many stitches should be present in each round.
