7 Fun Turkey Facts for Kids
It’s time to check out some interesting facts about turkeys. Or did you already know?
- Only male turkeys gobble.
- Wild turkeys can fly
- Wild turkeys sleep in trees.
- Did you know that they can change colors?
- Their poop determines if they’re male or female.
- Turkeys can see better than humans.
Turkeys make various sounds such as “purrs,” “yelps,” and “kee-kees,”. But the famous “gobble” call is only done during mating season by males.
It’s a myth that turkeys can’t fly, but wild turkeys have been known to fly up to 55 mph in short bursts.
Domesticated turkeys unfortunately can not fly, since they are heavier in weight.
Turkeys spend most of their time on the ground, but when it’s time to sleep, wild turkeys fly up into trees.
This is because they can’t see well at night. To protect themselves from predators, they roost at dusk and fly down at dawn.
The head of the turkey can change its color. By changing their color you can tell a turkey’s emotions. They can change from red to blue to white, depending on how excited or calm they are.
One way to find out if a turkey is male or female is by checking its droppings. A male’s poop is shaped like the letter J, while the female’s is more spiral-shaped.
Another surprising fact about turkeys is that they have three times better vision than humans. They can also see in color, and their eyesight covers 270 degrees.
These and more turkey facts can be found here.
